Emily Peters Kagan is a leading figure in the current revolution in women's MMA. She is a Professional MMA fighter and a current contestant on TUF 20, showing on Fox Sports. She finds purpose & inspiration in paving the way for future female fighters.

Since 2010, Peters-Kagan has been fighting out of Jackson’s/Winkeljohn MMA gym in Albuquerque, NM with a top female MMA team led by Julie Kedzie.

Emily started her martial arts career in 1999 with the American Jujitsu Association under Sheehan Feelemyer, and received her black belt four years later.  In 2003, she moved to Israel where she continued her training with the World Ju-Jitsu Federation, a local Muay Thai gym, Nakash Boxing, and a few Gi and no-Gi grappling dojos.  When she returned to the US in 2006, she joined Team Irish MMA Academy of Bangor, ME training under UFC veteran Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis and coach Garth Krane.

As far back as I can remember I was playing “ninjas” with my brothers and watching all the martial arts movies that made it big from the late 80’s to mid 90’s.  I remember admiring the dedication and hard work – the time and energy that goes into mastering a martial art.  I admired the lonely pursuit – the solitary life that seemed mandatory.  I loved the strength and power, but most of all the discipline to hone all of one’s human resources into the perfection of one pursuit.

At the age of 18, I finally had my opportunity to put my time in, and I began training in traditional Jujitsu.  Training in Jujitsu built my confidence and self-esteem.  I wanted to “defend and protect” with my new skills, and I felt confident walking down the street and encountering undesirable circumstances.  

For the next several years, I continued training in various martial arts styles in Israel, and in MMA in Maine.  At the time, I had not thought much about fighting, but simply trained for the love of training!

As I began developing myself as a mixed martial artist, I was also deep in the throws of developing a stronger sense of self, and identifying with a tremendous sense of purpose in my life.  Consequently, the two became intertwined and I have since embraced my warrior spirit as part of my guiding force in this life, and as a role that is essential to my purpose.

While other interests take the back seat on many occasions, I still find time for my other passions.  When I am not training for a fight, I can be found trail running for miles, mountain biking the dry southwest or muddy northeast, or backpacking to a new location that looks fun to explore!  

If I’m tired or seeking down time, my next favorite place to be is anywhere quiet enough to enjoy a cup of coffee while burying my face in a book or my journal.  When time is more abundant, I enjoy expressing my creativity in the kitchen cooking meals for friends, sketching into my notepad with charcoal, or squinting over the beadwork or crotchet that my grandmother taught me to do.

I once read that “our limits start where our vision ends." My vision has yet to find an end!  

With each stage of my life, I strive for honorable and admirable success and achievement, so that people will know who I am and what I stand for – Compassion and Empowerment of all people.  I want to inspire others to find their passion, pursue it with compassion, and live their lives empowered!

Having begun my international travel at a young age, it was only natural that I completed my first degree in Management & International Business.  After nearly 3 years of entrepreneurial work in Israel, I returned to the US to pursue a career that married my love for the outdoors with my passion for helping others and spent the next 3 years working with teenagers as both a Therapeutic Wilderness Guide and a Residential Counselor.

My kids in my work were my inspiration, and they played a significant part in inspiring my move to New Mexico where I have been pursuing my career as a Professional MMA Fighter as well as a Personal Trainer and Life Guide.

So why do I fight? I fight to be recognized – to be seen, to be known, and to be heard.  And I will be heard!  People will know me for the friendly, gentle, and approachable person I am, and yet they will know me as a warrior.  They will hear my story, and they will know the fire that burned inside and fueled me to a place of positive power and influence.  Through my story I strive to share what I have learned with everyone who wants to know, with the hope of helping to guide people toward the empowered life they desire, and so that I may witness smiles in their hearts and on their faces, and take pride in each small miracle that germinates from their beaming souls and fearless pursuits!

In addition to pursuing a career in mixed martial arts, I also offer personal coaching and guidance for both groups and individuals.

Holding certifications as a Personal Trainer (NASM certified), Martial Arts Instructor, and as a Wilderness First Responder enhances my already varied experiences coaching and guiding individuals in both therapeutic and non-therapeutic settings.

Everyone has different goals in life, and many of us are prevented from attaining them by perceived challenges and obstacles.  What are your goals?  What has been stopping you?
